Introduction

I receive a lot of questions regarding a good starter telescope for astronomy.  Understandably, people want to start out with a low cost (but decent) telescope to see if astronomy will hold their interest before sinking a lot of money into a higher-end telescope. I normally do not recommend the telescopes you find in department stores because of their toy-like construction. But I do recommend the DS Meade line of telescopes since I've had the opportunity to try them out.

Reflector Telescope

130mm (5.1") Altazimuth Reflector

A few years ago I looked through one of these at a local star party. The two guys that were set up beside me both had a similar telescope. I was using my 8" Celestron SCT at the time. I gotta say, the view of Saturn through their telescope was excellent. The rings were very crisp. The 2130 shown here is probably much more sophisticated than what they were using but technology has advanced. I was really impressed with the view especially for a low cost telescope.

This would be a nice starter telescope if you are interested in a refractor. It is best suited for observation of the moon and planets.

An amateur astronomer at another local star party was using one of these telescopes. He actually built his own tripod out of wood but was using these optics. He let me look at Jupiter through the scope at high power and I was really surprised with the detail that could be seen. This would be an excellent scope to transport around because it is light and can be set up rather quickly.

DS Meade 2114 LNT  

Reflector Telescope

I borrowed one of these from someone at work once. What a cool little reflector! It slewed across the sky very smoothly and provided decent views of the sky. It's the same size diameter as one of my first telescopes that I used for years.
